Coming to UNIL

I would like to come by public transport, what should I do?

The Anthropole building is served by the M1 metro line. The stop you need to get off at is "UNIL - Chamberonne". The Anthropole building is closest to the metro stop, with doors at either end of the building, so you can exit from either side of the metro.

From Lausanne station: Take the M2 towards "Croisettes" and get off at the 1st stop: "Lausanne-Flon". Then follow the signs for the M1 - "Renens Gare" line and get off at "UNIL-Chamberonne".

You can buy tickets directly on the SBB app, online or at the ticket machines (note: some only accept change).

Course Levels

Can I choose the level of my class?

Before the course begins, you will receive an e-mail asking you to complete an online language assessment test. The result of this test will form the basis of your class placement. The language assessment does not apply to those enrolled in the complete beginners' course.

On the first day, you will take part in an oral activity that will enable Le FIL to fine-tune the general level of the class, so that it is as homogeneous as possible. The "Introductions to academic texts" option and the complete beginners classes do not include this oral activity.

How do I know if I'm at the right level to enroll in the intensive course or the Introduction to academic texts option?

We recommend that you test your language level with the online test or refer to the CEFR language level grid.

Understanding language levels

I already have a language certificate. Can I take the next level up?

No. You will be assigned to a class according to the result of the first day's language skills and oral activity assessment, thus no language certificate will be taken into account when creating classes.

To register for the "Introduction to academic texts" or for the intensive courses, do I need to show a certificate attesting my language level?

Le FIL does not require any certificate. All you need to do is self-assess so that the courses you choose are not too difficult. Please note that no refund will be offered if the course is too difficult for your level.

Language skills assessment

How do I complete the language skills assessment?

Approximately two weeks before the start of the course, you will receive an e-mail from the IT Center containing your UNIL ID and an e-mail from Le FIL with instructions on how to complete the language skills assessment. You will need to log on to the Moodle platform using the login details provided (see IT services).

Is the language skills assessment compulsory?

If you are enrolled in an intensive or semi-intensive course, you are required to complete the language skills assessment. Failure to do so may result in cancellation of your enrolment, without refund. This assessment is essential, as it enables us to create classes according to each person's level.

If you have registered for the complete beginners course, you do not need to complete the language skills assessment.

General terms and conditions

The course certificate

Does the course certificate certify my language level?

The certificate certifies that you have taken a course at Le FIL de l'EFLE and mentions the course content and the number of hours of instruction. The level indicated is not necessarily equivalent to your personal language level, but to the level of the lessons taken.

If you need certification of your individual language level, we suggest you register for the Certificat of Qualification en Français (CQF) and check whether the institution for which you need a certificate recognizes the CQF.

Certificate of Qualification in French

I was ill, can I get my course certificate if I provide a medical certificate?

The course certificate is only issued if 80% of the morning courses (practical and workshop courses, IEU option courses, complete beginners courses) have been successfully completed. No exceptions may be requested.

Who recognizes the Certificate of Qualification in French (CQF)?

Le FIL recommends that you contact institutions directly where certification of a language level is required of you. Le FIL cannot be held responsible for the non-recognition by an institution of the CQF.

How do I prepare for the Certificate of Qualification in French (CQF)?

Sample exams are also available on the website, so that you can familiarize yourself with the content of the exams. You can also consult the assessment grids to find out what will be expected on exam day.
