The program offers:

  • An interdisciplinary training at the interface of the geosciences and environmental sciences;

  • A training that emphasises quantitative methods (spatial analysis, geomatics, geo-visualiation);

  • An orientation in one of the four following areas:
    • a general reflection on the organisation of spatial units, networks and systems, natural and human, at different spatial scales;

    • a deep reflection on the transformation of urbanised areas under the perspective of sustainable development, including eco-urbanism, urban politics, urbanisation projects;

    • a deep reflection of the changing dynamics of Alpine environments, with a strong emphasis upon mountain geomorphology, the evolution of geomorphic processes associated with climate and hydrological changes, and the problems and challenges of managing Alpine mountain regions;

    • a deep analysis of development processes, programmes and projects in the Global South including political, economic, social and environmental aspects.

Degree awarded

Master of Science in Geography orientation «Sustainable Urban and Spatial Planning», «Geomorphology and Management of Mountain Regions», «Development Studies» or «Spatial Analysis and Complex Systems». 



Candidates must be holders of a Bachelor of Science in Geosciences and Environment, subject area Geography or Environmnental Sciences, awarded by the University of Lausanne, or of a Bachelor’s degree in Geography or Environmental Studies awarded by a Swiss university. Another degree or academic title may be judged equivalent and give access to the Master’s degree course, with or without further conditions.
