Data management

The amount of data researchers produce, collect, analyze, and store as part of their projects has exploded during the last decade. In response to this situation, many funding agencies and research institutions are aiming to make the best possible use of research data, optimizing data management and encouraging sharing of data beyond the projects in which they were originally produced.

Data Management Plan

A Data Management Plan (DMP) is always required when submitting a research grant proposal to the SNSF or to the European Union.

At UNIL, a data management plan is also required when opening a dedicated secure space (e.g. to store sensitive personal data) on the university server.

For an introduction to the data management plan, please see the document-PDF

Resources

The UNIL Open Data website helps you to better understand what is considered as research data, the regulatory framework covering data processing, and the main steps in data management (planning, organization, storage and security, archiving, and sharing).

Dedicated to research in social sciences but also relevant to some research in psychology and political science, the Swiss Centre of Expertise in the Social Sciences (FORS) offers practical guides (in particular a guide on preparing a DMP), training courses, and support for data collection and management.

Data management seminars and workshops are also included increasingly often in the programmes of doctoral schools. The tool DMPonline UNIL is intended to help researchers in writing their Data Management Plan. DMP templates in Word format are also available in English and in French
