Foundations and other funding opportunities

FGSE Investment Fund (FINV)

The Deanship is committed to supporting through the FINV projects that constitute, in research or research infrastructure, investments for the Faculty. This fund also serves to amortize previous investments by encouraging their replacement when necessary. The fund offers 7 distinct reasons for financing, which can be summarized in 4 categories :

  • Projects and infrastructure with 50% matching funds (e.g. SNSF), projects and infrastructure (> CHF 50'000) without matchings (e.g. education),
  • Seed funding of projects (outside SNSF standards) capped at CHF 20'000,
  • Support for a Faculty workshop,
  • Support for projects related to Faculty Centres or international agreements,

One or two campaigns are launched each year and the Research Commission notifies the requests for the Décanat.

Example of guideline (regularly updated, only the document sent to each campaign is valid)

For technical question or general problem on Serval, contact

For questions related to Serval, contact the FGSE staff :

For a support on fund raising for publication, general questions on OA and author right, a training request, contact the FGSE research consultant Amélie Dreiss.

For a question concerning literature search, contact the staff of the libraries.

Publishing in Open Access (OA)

Researchers can self-archive their publication in Green OA using Serval, UNIL academic server.

Useful information and guidelines can be found here :

To update their publication list on Serval, researchers can :

  • Export their publications from WoS (Web of Science) in Endnote format, then import them in Serval.
  • Create a link between their ORCID number and Serval in their Unisciences webpage, in order to import their publications to Serval (Video Tutorial UNIL).
Finding a funding source for publications

Researcher can request SNSF funds for the publication of books or book chapters.

UNIL Researchers can request funds for book OA publication through the UNIL Publication fund.

Other publications

SNSF grantees can obtain funding of their articles in scientific journals (see SNSF rules).

For journal articles, UNIL has negotiated special Gold OA publication conditions for its researchers with the following publishers :

Research data management & DMP

For a support on data management, contact the FGSE research consultant Amélie Dreiss.

Storing data during a research project – short term

The research data Storing facility from the Scientific Computing and Research Support Unit from the IT Centre (DCSR Ci) offers a NAS to store research data. The responsible research project leaders (Pl) from UNIL can request a storage space for a generic project "fourre-tout" and several identified projects (SNSF, UE, UNIL…). A contribution to the resource cost (see costs) will be  charged to the PI according to the  Ci general conditions.

The DCSR-Ci UNIL offers also a high-performance computing service (HPC) ; UNIL members can request a computing capacity (see operating costs).

The SWITCHdrive service is a Cloud that allows storing, synchronising and sharing files. It is a good alternative solution to Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive: SWITCH data are stored in Switzerland and respect the federal law on data protection (LPD) and UNIL directives.

Archiving data at the end of a project – long term

To find a specialist or generalist data repository, the FNS suggests the use of registry.

Commonly used repositories :

  • FORS : Swiss repository in social sciences, based at UNIL
  • ZENODO : CERN generic repository, free up to a certain volume, accepted by the FNS
  • Dryad : Generic repository, free up to a certain volume, accepted by the FNS

Research communication and visibility

For any question or to send a form for a research that you wish to promote, please contact

For a support concerning Unisciences, personal or team webpage contact : Floriane Beetschen.

For IGD members’ personal webpage contact : Martin Vesely.

Communication : how to proceed

The Dicastère Research also promotes projects and publications carried out in the Faculty. We support your communication projects with the media and coordinate them with the Unicom service. We develop with you and, if necessary, format the material you can provide in order to produce a communication, a press release, a news, an article on the geoblog, an editorial, an interview, a diffusion through social networks (e.g. tweet).

You will find below forms (media article & press release) that help you structure the information/research you want to promote and allow us to act quickly. A text provided in French or English that follows the format recommended below may be published and distributed very quickly.

For questions on ethic compliance, contact the FGSE research consultant Amélie Dreiss.

For questions concerning travel abroad or field work security, contact the Faculty Assistant Rémy Freymond.

For questions concerning insurances :

For questions related to scientific integrity, contact the Délégué FGSE à l'intégrité scientifique Prof. hon. François Marillier.

Ethical compliance

Researchers performing studies implying human participants will be able to submit their project to a Research Ethics Commission (CER) from FGSE or UNIL (CER-UNIL) before the project starts.

An ethical compliance certificate can be mandatory if requested by some funders or editors. In other cases, the submission of a project to an ethic commission is the researcher’s choice.

Good practices

International travels

Researchers going abroad for their research projects should consult the Directive FGSE (see pdf below). This document aims at guiding students, teachers and researchers in planning their activity abroad. Usual rules and good practices are reminded.

Security and field work

FGSE members organising field work or group trips are responsible for self-assessing the risks for themselves and for the group, prior to departure. The self-assessment process is presented in the following document.

Scientific integrity

As the Unil Directive below points out, integrity is the cornerstone of science credibility and a justification for researchers' freedom within and outside the institution, since scientific fraud jeopardises trust in science as a whole.
